they're made by putting a thick layer of coloured wax crayon onto paper then painting black paint of ink (with a small amount of detergent to degrease it) over the wax. When dry you can scratch through the paint with a needle or a nail to expose the coloured wax underneath. Its a really nice technique, you should give it a try.
